Nick's Last Hurrah at Choo Choo Johnny's

His last hurrah as an only child, that is. On Saturday, I took Nick out for a Mommy and Me kind of day. I had errands to run, but I purposely picked places to go that I knew he would enjoy. We ate our lunch at Choo Choo Johnny's, a train-themed restaurant on the south side of Naperville.

I pass this restaurant everyday on my way to and from work, but we've never tried it. Nick was literally jumping up and down with joy when we went inside. "I see trains!" he said. Yup. In fact, a train actually delivered our food! Nick's eyes got really big when the train came, bearing a hot dog and fries for him. That's like every little man's dream!

While I cannot say much about the food other than to describe it as your typical hamburger joint-type fare, Nick has never enjoyed a meal so much. the picture below is out of focus, but it perfectly expresses Nick's state of mind.

We enjoyed our meal and then Nick got to play with the train table and some of the games. This place takes the train theme really far--the employees all wear conductor's uniforms, train-themed music plays, and a train goes around the ceiling.

This day was all about Nick, and I know he had a blast.

Besides our trian-themed lunch, we also went to garage sales looking for clothes and toys, visited Costco for some samples (Nick loves their samples), and went to the PetSmart to see the birdies and fishies.

We got a surprise when they had an adoption event. Nick wanted to take some kitties home with us, but I told him we had enough cats. We have 3, but they don't play with him like these kittens did. They actually enjoyed his attentions!

First Post of the Year. . .

but I will not be making resolutions tonight. I'll work on those tomorrow, perhaps. We just got back from the Shedd Aquarium, and I currently have heating pads on each of my legs. I am far, far too tired to write anything substantial. Therefore, I'm going to default to cute and silly.

This is Nick with one of his new toys. He received it for Christmas from his Grandpa Jay and Grandma Linda. It's Dance Star Mickey, and he is quite cheesy. Basically, you press his hand, and he talks and leads the kids through several dances. He even dances a bit himself. While he isn't as creepy as the Tickle-Me-Elmo, toys that talk make me a little wary. This is because, at least in my house, they seem to talk at odd times. Greg and I will be quietly sitting on the couch, when all of a sudden, we hear "Moo!" from one of his farm toys, or "Blue hand!" from Nick's talking puppy. I was skeptical about the Mickey at first. However, he makes Nick dance up a storm. He really loves it, and I'm so glad he got this toy for Christmas. It is helping him work off all of the Christmas cookies he ate.  ; )  The last two nights in a row, he's asked specifically for dance time. "Dance with Mickey?" he asked pleadingly.

Below you will see a video of Nick dancing with Mickey, and Nick's daddy helping. You can see where Nick got his dance moves.

To answer your questions:

1. Yes, Greg knew that I was specifically videotaping this to post on the Internet.
2. No, I have no idea why Nick is wearing only one sock.
3. Yes, Nick did go to sleep immediately after this dance. He was out like a light. He seems to need to burn off a lot of energy, and the dancing helps.

By the way, tonight is night #5 without the binky. So far, so good. Although I've noticed Nick chewing on his fingers more. Sigh. You can't win them all.

He Still Likes a Good Pony Ride

Last year, Nick had his first pony ride, and he really liked it. This year, he was a bit more subdued, but the pony was definitely a hit. Daddy took him riding again when we went to Sonny Acres last Sunday.

He behaved very well, and he was nicer to the pony than he was last year.

Greg loves doing this type of father/son thing with Nick, and I know Nick appreciates the time with his daddy. The whole day at Sonny Acres was pretty enjoyable for Nick, who loved every bit of it.

I'll post more pictures of our pumpkin farm visit later this week.  :)  Now I'm off to write lesson plans. Gobs of lesson plans.

Busy, Busy, Busy

Since school started, I have so much to post about and no time to write. I love the beginning of the school year, because there's so much promise. I also actually miss my students, and it's so nice to see them again, even if it's just in passing in the hallway. But I'm already missing the lazy days of summer, now that the craziness of the school schedule has started. I swear, there are some evenings when I do not sit down until it's time for Nick's bedtime, and that's only because he sits in my lap while we read stories. My school has been very hot and humid this week, so I come home every day and take a shower. Hopefully it'll cool down some next week.

Next week, I'm going to post about our trip to Navy Pier to see the Tall Ships. I also have a cool post about the best carrot muffin in the world, and a garden update. But for today, I'm going to talk about Nick and how he was busy with his Grandma Toni.

He loves to get into the laundry basket; in fact, he likes pushing his toys around in it as well. We have tons of developmentally appropriate toys, and yet my son prefers to play with the broom, a laundry basket, and an old toothbrush. Ah, well, at least he's easily entertained. Plus, he's mostly stopped eating the crayons, which is a definite improvement in maturity. Either that or he's figured out that they don't taste very good.

Next is a picture of him coloring with Grandma Toni and I. Lately Nick wants to color for about an hour each day. He doesn't make anything recognizable yet, just scribbles. But he physically puts crayons into our hands and begs us to draw. He likes when we draw shapes so that he can name them and then scribble on them. So far he can recognize (and name) our oh-so sophisticated drawings of the following things: square, house, socks, kitty, circle, star, moon, heart, car, and door.

Nick calls his crayons "colors!" and he just about flipped out on Tuesday when I took him into the store to buy groceries and decided to get an extra box of washable crayons. Poor kid nearly dislocated his arm trying to grab them from the back of the cart. I tried to convince him that he couldn't possibly color while in the cart, but to no avail. Luckily his arms are still short, and he got to color the picture above as soon as he got home.

Nick seems to have inherited his love for a brand new box of crayons from me. I'm a little embarrassed to say that I stockpile new boxes in my classroom, and when I color with my students, I always pull out my own "special" box of sharp new crayons. Of course, I'm such a softie that when my students beg to use my special crayons, I always let them, and then I have to start over again next time with a new box.

Leftover Cake is Just as Yummy!

Today Nick experienced the joys of the day after a birthday party: playing with streamers, balloons and new toys, and eating leftover cake. This particular picture shows his Sunday night dinner, where he ate a mixture of tomato, chicken sausage, and black beans, along with raspberries, milk, and whipped cream cake.
Yesterday was Nick's first birthday party, and I think it went rather well. He made a cute and adorable mess with blue whipped cream frosting, and he got lots of awesome presents. I will post about it once my sister sends the pictures. Above you can see him playing with an interactive book that was one of his presents. It sings and reads the story to him. Nick kept pushing the button and turning the pages. .

The only problem was that Nick woke up yesterday from his nap with a 102.3 degree fever. He had his shots Wednesday, and I'm thinking that might have caused his fever. I hope that's all it is. He is still running fevers, just not that high. Poor guy--his first birthday party and he has a fever for it. I think Nick still had a good time, though. His favorite parts were the balloons and the presents. I spent a little more than planned, but isn't that how it goes with kids?

One First Birthday Party=
=$72 in decorations, birthday hat, and balloons
=$140 in appetizers and drinks
=$50 for a Finding Nemo whipped cream cake
=$7 for the "1st Birthday"onesie
=7 hours of cleaning

But the joy of treating your little boy to a day of company, balloons, and fun?= Priceless

This is the face Nick made when he pressed the siren button on his driving toy. Once the button is pressed, a siren goes off and a voice says, "Slow down, little fella." This made me laugh, and Nick laughed, too.
